SHAPE OF LIGHT

Shape of Light book cover by Azeb Hameed

Azeb Hameed is a photographer and psychiatrist from Kerala, India, who lives and works in New York City. His work is driven by a passion for capturing the play of light on the surface of water. He pursues the unfathomable patterns that emerge from the dialogue between earth, water, and sky.

Through an impressionistic lens, he strives to portray the slender currents of meaning rising in a world without eyes to behold its own splendor. His journey with the camera has taken him from the slopes of the Adirondacks to a sandbar between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

His photographs have been published in Humana Obscura magazine. Shape of Light is his first photography book.

About the Book

Shape of Light book cover by Azeb Hameed

Light journeys across eons of nothingness and bounces around our world. It carries the history of the stars to us, long after their demise.

Shape of Light is a sustained meditation on the art of seeing. It is a visual journey through 110 photographs, captured over fifteen years across continents. Organized in a deliberate sequence, the book explores a broad arc of themes — from the origin of life and the interplay of natural elements in our world, to the emergence of human consciousness, and our relationship with the forces that brought us into being.

At its heart, the book is a visual record of one photographer's tryst with light and his love for painting with it. Not light as mere illumination — but light as the primary language of the natural world. Light that grows shadows on the road that take on a life of their own. Casting perceptions every which way while on the run. Enshrining our loves and losses while deceiving us in ways we wish to be — all at once.

The photographs in Shape of Light are the product of years of searching -many ideas had to wither away, so that a few could make it to the pages of this book.

The book is conceived as a visual symphony. A thematic flow intended to be experienced as a whole. As you move from one image to the next, what lies on either side of a photograph colors the experience of gazing at it. The sequence itself is the argument.

Behind every camera is an eye, and behind every eye is a particular consciousness. Shape of Light pulls back the curtain — not to explain, but to invite. To step past the threshold of the known and immerse oneself in these pages, where light lingers, colors hum, and shadows sing.
